Viewing Letterforms as Shapes

For the first graphic design assignment students examine the differences in letterforms between typefaces and how letterforms can interact as shapes.
This is done through 3 type quads, having students arrange the letterforms in an open composition, a quarter grid, and in 4 vertical strips.

The focus of this assignment is shapes and attention to detail as well as learning basic skills in Illustrator such as turning text into objects and utilization of clipping masks.
One of the compositions is also animated in photoshop to create a brief GIF.
