Lithography

Lithography is the process of drawing on a prepared block of limestone with greasy pencils and other media to create a duplicable work of art. Historically the process was used to make maps before transitioning to graphic works such as posters. As the process has been replaced by more efficient methods, lithography stones were given to universities for their printmaking programs for student use.

Concepts of Self, 11″ x 14″ 2025, stone lithograph

In order to reuse the stones for other pieces, once the finished edition is printed the stone is grained to re-smooth the surface. This means that the editions are limited, making the prints potentially worth more, as they can never be made again.

Divide, 11″ x 15″ 2025, stone lithograph

Inspired by Toulouse Lautrec’s lithograph posters, the prompt for this piece was “Topics not discussed”. I chose to base my work around the social norm of not discussing salary at the dinner table and the growing divide between the upper and middle classes, leaving an empty seat at the table.

Worth of a Woman, 13″ x 18″ 2025, ball grain plate and photo-plate lithograph

For this project, we chose another lithographer to study and mimic in both style and content. I chose Kathryn Polk, who’s work centers around women and their connections, along with personal symbolism of her own. I chose to focus on the perceived purpose for a woman, childbearing, and how all people are connected through women.

What to Make?, 15″ x 22″ 2025, stone and photo-plate lithograph

This was the first time I used a toner transfer technique, where I applied printed images to the stone before drawing on the stone further. The prompt for this piece was complements/contrast, where I compared digital and traditional forms of art making, as I create work in both mediums.

A Collection of Me, 13″ x 20″ 2025, stone lithograph

For this project, we again studied another artist but took more freedom in our interpretation and application of their work in both style and content. I studied Jonas Wood, who primarily is a painter, but also works with various printmaking mediums as well. His work is inspired by the objects that surround him in his daily life, and so for my work, I took inspiration from the objects in my life that have importance to me.

Home is Where Holly Is, 9″ x 13″ 2024, photo-plate lithograph

My first ever lithograph process, for this work I drew on a transparent film that would block select areas of light when used to expose the photo-plate for printing. Since it was my first lithograph, I was quite impressed by how much it resembles a pencil drawing, yet was done with ink and on a metal plate.
