Booklet Design
Ted Chiang’s Understand imagines the world of a super-intelligent human who must come to terms with his new reality.
Final Cover Flat
Understand explores the changing understanding of the world Leon faces after receiving hormone K injections to repair brain damage.
Due to his rapidly expanding intelligence, Leon becomes isolated from all other people, creates his own language, and learns how to influence and change the emotions and physical functions of others, all through his own thoughts.
The cover design highlights this isolation due to his hyper-intelligence through the visuals, while the geometric sans-serif typeface suggests the rebuilding of understanding through simple shapes.
Page Layouts
All text content of the story was designed and formatted in Adobe InDesign, allowing pages to be printed and assembled into physical booklets.
A sans-serif typeface is used in the body text, which is arranged with a strictly solid left edge, a deviation from standard type-formatting practices. This change may not be consciously recognized by the reader, but will cause a subtle discomfort when reading, keeping the reader subconsciously on edge throughout the story.
