Wrath<\/em> explores vernacular type combining typographic transformation and narrative through iteration and creation of letterforms through material processes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vernacular type is defined as informal lettering created without formal training. Often this can look like handwriting, painted signs, or graffiti. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the type sample I found to base additional letterforms from. The letters I chose to trace from this type sample were W, R, H, O, and G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the digitized letterforms, I created new letterforms to expand the alphabet and create a combined sample, the word “WRATH.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to make my letterforms out of an alternate material, I added a thick stroke to widen the letters and make them more legible when transformed into an alpha pattern<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An alpha pattern is a pixelated pattern for creating crocheted panels with multiple colors and custom patterns. After calculating my stitch count, the pattern was generated to be approximately 18 inches long and 12 inches tall, or 72 by 40 single-crochet stitches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After following the pattern, creating a back panel, and stuffing the pillow, I finalized my contrast narrative with the setting in the photograph. The word “wrath”, its stylized appearance, and the striking red and black colors of the pillow directly contrast the material and setting of stuffed animals and blankets, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
